Vernon L. Davey Junior High SchoolClasses opened at Vernon L. Davey Junior High School in September, 1930, making it the first new public school in the city since Washington School was constructed in 1912.The school was named after former Schools' Superintendent Vernon L. Davey, whose tenure spanned the turn of the century and ended with his retirement in 1912.The ninth grade classes at VLD were transferred to the high school in 1954, and the school served seventh and eighth grade pupils until 1995. Then the school was renamed Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts, serving grades 6-12. |
