Home from college for the weekend, last year's
drum captain, David
Friday (far right with his back to the camera) drops by to
check out the new drumline and give them some pointers.
In the video, the drummers are learning to
Keep the Beat and hang onto it as long as they can!
Inside the school, the band is warming up with
some scales under the leadership of Mr. Goode.
There are brand new musicians mixed in among the more experienced
musicians who also act as their instructors.
In the above video, Darian Bravo conducts
the band in some scales. The band uses this time to make sure
each instrument is in tune and to make sure every new band member
can play every note of the scales.
Lunch is served! Band Parent Association
President Jacqueline
Saez (Left) hold the plate for Denzel
Thompson (Center) as Band Parent Treasurer Michelle Mckoy
(Right) piles his plate high with home cooked food. Your donations
provide money for the food, but the Band Parent Members do all the
work!
Lunch time is every camper's favorite time! It's
a quiet time, but also a good time to socialize and get caught up
on what everyone has been doing since the start of summer
vacation.
Back to work! The band gets ready to begin work
on their repertoire of marching band music for the fall. Jesse Ancion,
no doubt remembering when he was new to the band last year,
teaches newest band member Devante Hinson some of the
fundamentals of playing the trumpet that he will need to know by
heart.
Music Lessons are spontaneously taking place all
over the place as students make full use of the practice rooms
and vacant spaces to hold sessions. Here, in the music locker
room, Yakeem Lee
gives trombone instruction to another new student (name to be
added).
About 3:30 PM, the students who remain (some had
to leave early for various reasons) fall out with their
instruments ready for some marching lessons, this time with
instruments in hand. Next week they will play and march, but for
now it's just to get used to holding their arms in position with
their instrument in the "ready" position.
Even though they have no large unbroken space to
practice, they make do with the school's parking lot with its
trees, shrubs and concrete "islands" creating
interesting marching problems for them to solve. "Deal with
it," advises Band Director Goode. "This is all we have
to work with." And so they deal with it and step over the
bushes and around the trees as they practice basic marching
formations before being dismissed at 4:00 PM to go home from
their first week at Summer Band Camp.
